Tamale prepares for Independence day parade

Preparations are underway in the Northern regional capital -Tamale, as the metropolis gets ready to host Ghana’s 62nd Independence anniversary on Wednesday.

As part of plans, the City of Tamale has seen a face-lift as shoulders of principal streets in the metropolis have been painted.

Hotels and guest houses in the Tamale Metropolis are cashing in ahead of the event.

Citi News checks revealed that rooms are fully booked in advance.

For the first time in the history of Ghana, the Independence Day celebration has been moved from the national capital, Accra, to Tamale.

The 62nd Independence Celebration is on the theme: “Celebrating Peace and Unity.

Renovation work at the 20,000 seater capacity Aliu Mahama sports stadium where the event will be hosted is almost done.

Authorities say, work will be completed before the set day.

The Chairman for the Independence Day planning committee, Laud Commey has also assured of heavy security.

In an interview with Citi News, the Northern Regional Director for the Centre for National Culture, Gladys Tang said, various cultural troops across the Northern Region are rehearsing to entertain the public on the day.

Special Guest of Honour, President of Niger Mahamadou Issoufou, is expected to be in the country on Wednesday, March, 6.

International dignitaries, traditional leaders and other great personalities are expected to grace the occasion.
 
On his part, the Northern Regional Minister reiterated his call on residents of the Sagnerigu Municipality and the Tamale Metropolis to keep their surroundings clean.
 

We’ll mark 62nd Independence Day in Tamale to reinforce Dagbon Unity – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo announced the government’s decision to move Ghana’s 2019 independence day celebration to the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.

According to him, the move is aimed at solidifying the peace and unity achieved in Dagbon this year.

He stressed that this will be the first time in the country’s history the anniversary will be held outside Accra.

“In order to reinforce and support the process of reconciliation and the restoration of peace in Dagbon, I have decided that this year, the 62nd Independence Day celebration will be held in Tamale on 6th March,” he said.

“This will be the first time in our nation’s history that the celebration is being held outside of our national capital, Accra. I am very much looking forward to it,” he added

6th March parade cancelled in N/R districts 
The 6th March celebration in all districts within the Northern Region have been cancelled for this year.

All the districts will instead be at the Northern Regional capital Tamale for the national parade on March 6.

According to the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, this is to enable all Districts and Municipal Chief Executives, Directors of Education, staff, and school children to participate in the national parade.

“We’ve cancelled all the district ones so that everybody focuses on national one that is going to be held in Tamale,” he told Citi News.
