Dogboe to quit boxing?

Former WBO super bantamweight champion, Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe, is expected to take a long vacation from the sport after suffering a second straight defeat at the hands of Emanuel Navarrete at the Convention Centre in Tucson, Arizona, last Saturday.

According to the boxer’s father and trainer, Paul Dogboe, the time was ripe for his son to pursue his education after a second humiliating loss to the hard-hitting Mexican in a bid to reclaim the title he lost last December.

Paul explained that it was difficult losing two straight fights against the same opponent,  and that it would be appropriate for the former champion to consider a different career path.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports from his Arizona base, the trainer noted that he wanted his son to take a break from the ring and concentrate on his education until the hunger to fight returns.

The former British army officer, who singlehandedly guided his son from the amateur ranks to claim the world title with a stunning knockout win against the feared Mexican, Jessie Magdaleno in 2018, revealed also that he was willing to step back to get Dogboe a new trainer should he decide to come back to boxing.

“Oh yes, he will take a long vacation and continue his education and if that hunger comes back then he will come back to fight.

“I think I will have to get him another trainer if he decides to come back and fight because I can’t do this anymore,” Paul told the Graphic Sports hours after his son’s second career loss.

Navarrete dominated the entire bout with another unanimous decision victory looming when the final bell sounded, only for Paul to throw in the towel to save his battered son following a knockdown — his second in the fight — in the early minutes of the 12th round.

Dogboe failed to live up to expectation as he was outclassed by the hard-punching and technically efficient Navarrete who utilised his height and reach advantage to earn a deserving technical knockout (TKO) win over the Ghanaian.
