Last week, Ghana was thrown into a state of fear and alarm as the news of 2 kidnapped Canadian girls took the centre stage of Ghanaian media. “So kidnapping still lingers?” many asked in fear.
The Ghana Police Service in a statement signed by Director of Public Affairs ACP David Klu mentioned that the incident happened at Ahodwo, Kumasi Royal Golf Club, at 8.25pm on 4th June 2019.
12th June, 2019, 8 days after the Canadian girls were kidnapped, another breaking news that Ghanaians woke up to was that the Canadian girls have been rescued. Mixed emotions greeted this news as there was sigh of relief amongst the Canadian community and unending wonder as Ghanaians quiz when the kidnapped Takoradi girls who have been in the custody of the Kidnappers for more than 250 days will be found.
The Deputy Minister of Defence Major Derick Oduro (Rtd) has said in an interview with Ekosii Sen’s Philip Osei Bonsu that he is not God to promise when the kidnapped Takoradi girls would be back. Yes, we strongly agree that as a mortal being you do not have the omnipotent ability to know when the Taadi girls would be back but the question that pings the mind of many now is, “how was the Canadian girls rescued and why can’t the Ghana Police employ same tactics to rescue the Taadi girls?” It appears the issue of the kidnapped Taadi girls is more complex than Ghanaians see it. It appears kidnappers can’t keep foreigners for long. It appears the support of the Canadian Security Agencies to beef up the search of the Canadian girls as rumoured made this successful.
Did the Canadian Embassy’s notice to her citizens stating that there are violent crimes in Ghana including armed robbery and kidnapping and urged them not to show any signs of wealth a compelling reason for the SWAT Department of the Ghana Police to flex their muscles to bring the 19 and 20 year old Canadian ladies? Did this put the brand Ghana in a terrible light that made the security persons redeem themselves by proving that ‘You lie bad, we still be the peaceful Ghana you know’?.
We acknowledge the frantic effort of the Ghana Police in arresting one John, a mastermind of the kidnapped Taadi girls but I would want to ask the supporting departments that helped the SWAT Team to rescue the Canadian ladies if such tactics could be employed to rescue Priscilla Mantebea Koranchie, Priscilla Blessing Bentum and Ruth Love Quayson?
We do not want any lip service to give hope but we want to know the chances of rescuing the kidnapped Taadi girls?
