NPP executives suspended over Obour’s parliamentary bid

About 39 polling station executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante Akyem South constituency of the Ashanti region have been suspended indefinitely for supporting former President of the Musician Union of Ghana (MUSIGA),  Bice Osei Kuffour, popularly known as Obour.

Their crime, according to reports, was honouring the invitation of Obour who has been organising Clean up exercise and music concerts in the Constituency.

The Constituency Executives suspect these activities are a subtle campaign for Obour who they allege is vying for the Asante Akyem South parliamentary seat.

Christian Asante, a suspended polling station chairman for Adansi D/A Junior High School on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Thursday, said the decision taken by the constituency executives is in violation of NPP regulations.

He noted that nominations have not been opened and so no candidate is entitled to meet delegates to sell his or her campaign message but that does not prevent a delegate from attending a non political program organised by an aspirant or welcoming a party member when he or she visits him.

A livid Mr Asante is convinced the indefinite suspension is a ploy by the constituency chairman, Gilbert Adarkwa Yiadom who is being influenced by the MP, Hon Kwaku Asante Boateng, to settle personal scores.

“We did no wrong because even the incumbent Member of Parliament, Kwaku Asante-Boateng also met other polling station executives so why didn’t they suspend them,” he quizzed.

In a rebuttal, the Asante Akyem South Constituency Secretary, William Obeng, said the suspension was apt.

He said the 39 polling station executives had copies of a circular from NPP national executives prohibiting anyone from meeting any aspirant but they flouted it.

The indefinite suspension, Mr Obeng stressed is to serve as deterrent to others intending to repeat the same mistake.
