Former President Jerry John Rawlings is strongly convinced that his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not win the 2020 general elections.
According to him, it would be impossible for his party to defeat the ruling New Patriotic Party in 2020.
However, he stated that the leadership of NDC is aware of a 2024 agenda.
Mr. Rawlings, who is the founder and Chairman of the NDC, was speaking
at the party’s National Cadres Conference held in Ejisu in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, September 28, 2019.
He accused some leaders of the party of hijacking the NDC for their parochial interests.
The former President did not mention names of such leaders but was strong in his conviction that greed and selfishness by some individuals have affected the fortunes of the NDC.
He believed such leaders have used their financial power to buy the party in order to maintain their positions in 2024.
“There are some among us in the leadership who initially didn’t think that after four years you can wrestle power from these people,” he said.
“And yet if I may speak frankly and have gone ahead and almost purchased the power of this party into their pockets and claiming to be aiming towards 2020 when I know when some of you should know that their aim is not really towards 2020,” according to the former military leader.
“You secured 2020 out of the way for yourself, so nobody will…you will be the whatever, knowing damn well that you just give it for full what you call it to pass through when you know 2024 is your target,” he disclosed.
Former President John Mahama who lost the 2016 general elections miserably while he was a sitting President, is seeking a desperate comeback as he leads the NDC into the 2020 elections.
