James Oppong-Boanuh confirmed as IGP

President Nana Akufo-Addo has confirmed James Oppong-Boanuh as substantive Inspector General of Police with a two-year contract extension.

His confirmation comes two months after he was appointed acting IGP after the exit of David Asante Apeatu.

His contract has also been extended by two years by the President after President Akufo-Addo in October 2018 granted him a one-year extension which will end this month, October 2019.

James Oppong-Boanuh was appointed Deputy IGP in 2017 ahead of his mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

He has held various portfolios including Director-General: Administration, Services, PIPS, Human Resources, Research and Planning among others.

In a message congratulating him, the Ghana Police Service said his appointment is an acknowledgement of “confidence reposed in Mr. Oppong-Boanu and an endorsement of actions started by him to prevent and reduce the fear of crime in the country.”

Mr. Oppong-Boanu after taking over a few months ago has taken action against a number of his officers said to have abused their offices.

On October 2, 2019 he directed the immediate interdiction of two police officers, No 38902 General Sergeant Patrick Amoako and No 46796 General Lance Corporal Isaac Marfo of Railway police station under the Koforidua District police Command.

The two officers were captured in a video torturing a suspect in police custody.

He had earlier in July 2019 also interdicted the Lakeside District Police Commander, DSP Eric Partey Opata, for detaining a suspect in custody for nine days.

According to a statement from the Police, DSP Eric Party Opata kept a suspect behind bars for nine days without going through the ‘due process’.
