When things are ‘really tough’ I call him and cry – Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo thanks Otumfuo for support

Outgoing Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo has for the first time revealed that the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II whiles in office was her “secret back support” when things concerning national issues really goes ‘tough’.

She was emphatic that her phone calls conversation with the King for ‘critical advice’ was “very important” and “even when he missed my calls, he will eventually call me back.”

“When I am happy about something or terribly unhappy about something, I will call and sometimes I cry and complain and he [Otumfuo Osei Tutu II] will always give me heart,” she disclosed.

Madam Sophia Akuffo was speaking in her parting remarks at the Supreme Court in Accra where she much praised all former Presidents for their support to her successful journey in the law fraternity.

She lauded the contribution of successive former Presidents; Flt Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, the late John Evans Atta Mills, John Dramani Mahama and sitting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Jstice Sophia Akuffo also thanked Pastor Mensa Otabil for his support. She recalled that, it was President Rawlings who first nominated her to the Supreme Court in 1995 while President Kufuor helped send her to the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights in 2006.

Under President Mahama, she became the President of the Lusaka-based court and was finally nominated Chief Justice by President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2017.
