The Ghana Football Association has confirmed Charles Kwablan Akunnor as the Head Coach of the Black Stars.
Akunnor was an assistant coach in the Kwesi Appiah-led technical team that was dissolved by the FA earlier in the year.
He will be assisted by veteran gaffer David Duncan.
Akunnor’s slow but steady rise in the game began in his playing days when he captained Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga in the early 2000’s and is till now one of the players most revered by the fans.
He led Kumasi Asante Kotoko to the money zone of the CAF Confederation Cup, beating teams like Zambia’s finest ZESCO United and Nkana FC as well as Cameroonian giants, Coton Sport.
Before Kotoko, Akunnor had managed in at Hearts, Dreams FC, Ashanti Gold, where he played, and Sekondi Eleven Wise.
The Black Stars though will be Akunnor’s toughest job yet since leaving it as captain and holding on to the assistant role for just two games against South Africa and Sao Tome – coming in to replace Ibrahim Tanko under the orders of former boss, Kwesi Appiah.
As coach, Akunnor will be held to the same high standards any manager of the Black Stars is held to.
Topical of his tasks will be to guide the team to the next AFCON and also to the next world cup in Qatar.
