In an operation it conducted on February 14 this year to clamp down on the activities of criminals within its jurisdiction, the Madina Divisional Police Command arrested 66 suspected criminals.
The Baatsona Divisional Police Command, on February 15, in another swoop, also arrested eight men, made up of five Ghanaians including a woman and three Nigerians, for possessing substances suspected to be narcotics.
Briefing journalists in Accra last Tuesday, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, said the suspects were aged between 18 and 30 years and would be put before court soon after investigations.
The swoops
She said the swoop at Madina, which was carried out between 9pm and 11pm at the Madina Market area and some criminal dens, led to the arrest of the suspects who were all males, while that at Baastona occurred between 5:30pm and 7pm at the Kotobabi Market and Klagon area, all suspected to be hideouts for criminals.
Four persons, including a Nigerian and a 19-year-old boy, who was found with 58 wrapped substances of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic drug, were arrested at the Kotobabi Market.
At Klagon, an 18 year-old boy was arrested with 89 wrappers and two sachets of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, together with three other males and a female.
Warning
Mrs Tenge said the operations were carried out in an effort to reduce the crime rate in those areas and make it possible for the public to go about their activities safely.
She said other divisions under the Accra Regional?Police Command would also embark on similar operations.
She warned criminals, drug users and drug peddlers that “the police is coming after you. We will go all out to get rid of all of you.”
