Road crashes: 393 killed in 2 months

-Motorcycles alone killed 139 commuters


ROAD traffic crashes in the first two months of 2020 have killed 393 commuters in reported cases across the country.

In January, 222 were killed while 171 lost their lives in February.
174 killed by commercial vehicles
Out of this, 174 were killed by 1,430 commercial vehicles that were involved in crashes.
1,286 injured by commercial vehicles
Commuters on these commercial vehicles who sustained injuries also amounted 1,286.
80 Killed by private vehicles
Similarly, the 1,616 private vehicles involved in road traffic crashes for the two months also killed 80 commuters while injuring 590 travellers.
139 Killed by motorcycles
Provisional data compiled by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service revealed that motorcycles killed 139 commuters and injured 703 passengers.
Motorcycles killed more people than private vehicles
This shows that the 139 commuters killed by motorcycles is higher than the 80 commuters killed by private vehicles for the two months.
This is also a cause for concern because the 1,616 private vehicles involved in road traffic crashes is far higher than the 827 motorcycle crashes.
117 Pedestrians killed
Out of the 393 commuters killed, 117 were pedestrians, raising concerns about the safety of pedestrians, as 309 of them were also injured.
Breakdown of deaths in January
For January, commercial vehicles killed 99 people; private vehicles killed 44 commuters; motorcycles claimed the lives of 79 commuters while the number of pedestrians killed was 60.
Breakdown of injured in January
The injured in January are commercial vehicles – 750, private vehicles – 249, motorcycles – 352, and pedestrians – 158.
Breakdown of deaths in February
For February, commercial vehicles killed 75 people, private vehicles killed 36, motorcycles claimed the lives of 60 commuters while the number of pedestrians killed was 57.
Breakdown of injured in February
The injured in February are commercial vehicles – 536, private vehicles – 296, motorcycles – 351, and pedestrians – 151.
3,874 Vehicles involved in road traffic crashes
The total number of vehicles involved in road traffic crashes in the first two months of this year was 3,874.
