Hon. Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, the Western Regional Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Takoradi has called on mining companies operating in the Western Region to help develop the communities they operate, citing South Africa’s Johannesburg as the quintessential.
Hon. Okyere Darko-Mensah said “We need to have our towns and communities where gold is mined developed into cites comparable to Johannesburg in South Africa in order to truly reflect the value of gold in those localities.”
At the maiden edition of ‘Ghana Gold Expo’ organized in Takoradi, Hon. Darko-Mensah mentioned ‘galamsey’ in the region as a situation the region and nation at large is still fighting and called for workable solutions from all stakeholders to stamp out the menace.
The three days event at Best Western Plus Atlantic Hotel was on the theme ‘promoting responsible Gold in Africa, zero mercury.’
The event was collaboration between Aurum Monaco and the Western Regional Coordinating Council.
The aim of the event was to create a synergy among stakeholders as well as providing appropriate framework to bring transparency in the gold trade across the globe.
