The Western Regional referral center, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital has closed down the Antenatal Care Unit, Child Welfare Clinic and the Ear Nose and Throat Unit after a staff tested positive for COVID-19.
The three units in the hospital, have been disinfected and other protocols effected to contain the infection.
Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Joseph Tambil who confirmed the news, said the infected staff has been isolated and all other contacts and staff at the above units in the hospital asked to self-quarantine. Asked when these units will be reopened for use, Dr. Tambil expressed uncertainty with how soon they could address the situation. He however prayed they get things done within a week, and then assess the impact to determine the appropriateness with the reopening of these units.
A mass testing has been effected on all contacts, as the staff is said operate a food vending business at the hospital.
Management fear the risk of infection given this circumstance, may be very dire.
So far, the region has recorded a total of 61 cases of COVID-19 with one death.
