Prez. Akufo-Addo in crunch meeting with cabinet towards unlocking restrictions

The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo is in a crunch meeting with cabinet this afternoon to decide whether or not to unlock restrictions imposed as a result of COVID-19 pandemic. This was revealed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin today.

“This afternoon at 2pm, he’s holding an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss what has been put forward so far. The last time he spoke he said the restrictions were to last till the 31^st of May, so logically, either before the 31^st of May, or on the 31^st of May, the President would have to come back to the nation and tell them the way forward. So the meeting at cabinet this afternoon would go a long way to determine what the President will say when he addresses the nation,” he said.

He stressed that the outcome of the meeting will influence measures that will be taken towards the easing of restrictions that have since been effected in the country to manage the novel coronavirus.

“So definitely when he speaks, the whole country will get a good sense of where we are – moving forward; whether we are going to ease restrictions or whether we are going to continue as things are currently, or whether he’s going to lock down certain parts of the country. All of that will be addressed by the President when he speaks on Sunday,” he stated.

Mr. Eugene Arhin emphasised that the President will always put citizens of Ghana ahead in any of his plans and is therefore confident the President will make a decision in the best interest of Ghanaians and urged Ghanaians to trust him to make the best of decisions for the country.

Should this anticipated outcome be realised, the Electoral Commission, given the precautionary measures outlined to conduct its voter registration exercise, will execute this task without any frustration from any political party or Civil Society group.

Borders, airports and other restricted sectors/business will resume their operations under strict protocols towards preventing the spread of the virus. Churches in particular who have for weeks been determined to have these restrictions on public gathering eased will gracefully resume their service.

The schools are not exempted from this either.

Mr. Eugene Arthin further stated that the cabinet meeting this afternoon is a follow up to several stakeholder engagements the President had done since his last address to the nation on the coronavirus pandemic.

“Between the last time he spoke and now, he’s been engaged in a lot of stakeholder consultations; he’s met with people from the education sector, the Ghana Medical Association; he’s met with representatives from labour; he’s held interactions with religious leaders, all trying to get a sense of where or how we should look forward with respect to the outbreak of the pandemic in the country,” he said.
