PHOTOS: Policeman grabbed for robbery

A Lance Corporal in the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has been arrested for his involvement in alleged robbery.

His name has been given as Bright Akosa, who was enlisted into the service in 2012.

His mother unit is the SWAT, one of the operational units of the GPS, but for the past two years he has been attached to the Formed Police Unit (FPU) in Accra.

He is alleged to be part of a car-snatching and robbery syndicate operating within the Greater Accra and the Central regions.

Lance Corporal Akosa was arrested on Tuesday morning at Elmina in the Central Region by police personnel from Accra.

He was arrested alongside a civilian accomplice called Francis Aidoo.

The two have since been handed over to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of CID Headquarters, Accra for investigation.

Information available indicates that Lance Corporal Akosa has been on the police wanted list for some time now for a series of robberies, especially car-snatching.

The information indicated that the two suspects were offering for sale the Nissan Versa taxi with registration GW 6818 – 20 at Elmina, a vehicle they robbed from the owner in Accra.

On Tuesday, September 15, the police from Accra had information that the suspect was selling the said Nissan Versa to unsuspecting buyers and feigned interest in the transaction.

“Plain clothes personnel who were dispatched for the said operation arrested the suspect in the course of the transaction and sent him to Accra for investigation to commence,” a DAILY GUIDE source said.

A source said the Regional Crime Officer had detailed a CID operative to feign interest in buying the car, and the price was agreed at GH¢8,500.

In the process of the transaction, the officers arrested the policemen and the civilian suspects at about 7:00 am.

A spot search conducted on the police officer led to the recovery of a foreign pistol loaded with eight rounds of live ammunition, police ID card, voters’ ID card, GCB Visa card, Bank of Africa Visa card , National Identification ID card (Ghana Card),  all bearing the name of the police officer and an iPhone 7 Plus.

Also, a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, known in local parlance as wee, a lighter and a black mobile phone were recovered from Francis Aidoo.

They are facing a preliminary charge of robbery and possession of narcotic drug without lawful authority and possession of fire arm and ammunition without lawful authority.
