Ghana winger Christian Atsu has bid farewell to Newcastle United in a post on Twitter, saying he will never forget his time at the club.
Atsu’s contract will come to an end on June 30, but he has announced his departure following a difficult 2020-21 season which concluded last month.
The 29-year-old was forced to train with the reserve team after manager Steve Bruce claimed before the start of the season that the player was not in his plans.
Atsu who stayed because he could not secure a transfer made a single appearance (playing a total of 10 minutes) for the first team. He was not named on the bench for a Premier League match.
The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations most valuable player thanked the players, staff and fans of the club for their support during his five years.
Atsu joined Newcastle on a permanent deal from Chelsea in 2017 after helping the former earn Premier League promotion while on loan in 2016-17 season. He made a total of 121 appearances.
Atsu has been linked with a move to Sheffield United.
