It was reported on Thursday, August 19, that, a fifty-five-year-old man has met his untimely death whilst trying to escape from the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital’s COVID-19 Centre in Sekondi.
The victim, Paulus Okine, was referred to the COVID-19 centre from the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department on Wednesday, August 18.
On Thursday morning, security personnel at the covid centre spotted the victim leaving the centre. The security person inquired why he was leaving but he reportedly told the security man that he would harm him if he continues to pursue him.
After a while, he was found dead near the nurses quarters in the area.
The wife of the deceased, Mrs Okine speaking on Skyy Power 93.5FM’s Jolly Breakfast Show debunked claims of his husband being affected with COVID-19 but it was due to the negligence of the hospital that led to his untimely death.
According to her, she sent her husband to the SDA hospital in Takoradi after feeling unwell and was told his lungs are in very bad shape. His situation got worse and was referred to the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital to be treated.
She said, “They did whatever that was necessary including an X-Ray, I took some samples from him to the lab to be tested to know what the problem was. I was even ordered to make part payment before the 6th oxygen was installed on him.”
“On Tuesday, I went to the lab for the result but they told me the sample did not work so they gave me a new container to bring another sample to be tested.”
“On Wednesday, the doctor called to tell me my husband has contracted COVID-19 after results from the lab”
Mrs Okine claimed the news made her furious and disturbed, making her rush to the hospital, accusing the doctor and nurses of a false report because none of them wore protective gear treating her husband and they seem not bothered about contracting the virus either.
“I told them if my husband has contracted COVID-19, then they as well have contracted the virus because they did not wear protective gear treating him and seem not bothered, which made me skpetic about their report.
“He was booked to go CDH, they told me they will calculate my cost for me later, the cost of the ambulance that will transport my husband will be GHS100 which they even charged me GHS20 for the pen used to write the information of my husband.”
According to Mrs Okine, the husband called, informing her about his COVID-19 negative result after further test by a doctor at the CDH.
However, the family then demanded his immediate discharge but the hospital declined because they wanted to further monitor him on Wednesday evening.
On Thursday, Mrs Okine had a call from her in-law who works at the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital to report on the death of his husband after trying to escape the Hospital.
The in-law also claimed he first received the call about the death of his brother from someone who called through the deceased phone.
Moreover, Mrs Okine revealed after visiting the hospital, she heard different reports concerning her husband’s death and the hospital is being shady that she believes they are responsible for the incident.
