A world acclaimed menswear designer for renowned Louis Vuitton and founder of Off-White, Virgil Abloh has died of cancer on Sunday November 28.
His death was confirmed on his verified Instagram page by his management. In the post, his management confirmed his silent battle with cancer.
“We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues,” the post read.
“For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture” the post further stated.
He became famous as the first black artistic director for Louis Vuitton and later founded the cultish streetwear label ,Off-White.
The Ghanaian-American designer’s popular ‘embroidered bib’ he designed which was worn by Timothee Chalamet became the talk of the fashion world in 2019. Other versions were donned by Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman.
He also made significant contribution to the world of footwear, setting the standard for innovative sneakers, with his Off-White x Nike designs.
In the world of music, he was a prolific DJ, played at music venues around the world, working as a creative director for the Kamye West’s design agency Donda as well as a designed some of the rapper’s album covers.
He was 41.
