Appiatse community welcomes first newborn baby after disaster

There was finally a pint of joy in the Appiatse community after the deadly explosion on Thursday, January 20, when a newborn was welcomed.

Gifty Tetteh Korleki, 27, delivered a baby girl at Appiatse Relief Camp on Wednesday, February 2, at about 5:30 AM in morning.

Her husband could not witness the beautiful moments because he had left for work before she could deliver. 

This is the fourth child of the mother and she was elated to make history in the community and also bring smiles to the faces of his fellow members amidst the storm.

The child according to reports will be named Ekua, which is according to the day she was born.

On Thursday, January 20, 2022, an explosion occurred along the Tarkwa-Bogoso-Ayamfuri road after a truck transporting mining explosives was involved in a crash.

The explosion killed 14 persons injured 179 and displaced hundreds at Appiatse with their town completely destroyed.

The police are investigating the cause of the crash.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo contributed GH¢100,000.00 to the Appiatse Explosion Support Fund set up by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to provide assistance to persons affected by the accident.

He made the donation when the five-member steering Committee of the Fund called on him at the Jubilee House, Accra on Thursday.

The Committee, chaired by Dr Joyce Aryee, a former Chief Executive of Ghana Chamber of Mines, and a Management & Communication Consultant, will manage the Fund by raising money and supervising its disbursement.
