The Western Region has achieved a significant milestone in women’s participation in Ghanaian politics.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Regional Women’s Organiser Gladys Egyir, the number of female MPs from the National Democratic Congress has increased from one to five. This progress marks a new era of inclusivity and development in the region.
Before this year’s election, Dorcas Affo-Toffey was indeed the only female parliamentary representative from the Western Region, specifically from the Jomoro Constituency, serving among seven male counterparts in the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In the recent December 7 elections, five female candidates from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious against their male counterparts from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in their respective constituencies
In the Essikado constituency, Professor Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah made history by breaking the NPP’s 28-year dominance, securing 26,166 votes against Charles Bissue’s 17,754 votes.
Emelia Arthur of the Shama constituency also triumphed over Isaac Kwamena Afful, garnering 23,043 votes compared to Afful’s 17,082.
In the Jomoro constituency, Dorcas Affo Toffey won her second term, defeating former Chieftaincy Minister Paul Essien with 25,349 votes to Essien’s 14,195.
Mavis Kukua Bissue Boateng of the Ahanta West constituency also emerged victorious, securing 28,233 votes against Francis Eric Pobee’s 19,663.
Lastly, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central, overcame court injunctions and secured 25,375 votes, defeating Dr. Albert Arko of the NPP, who garnered 12,985 votes.
In an exclusive phone interview, Western Regional Women’s Organiser Gladys Egyir shared her insights, saying
“This success didn’t come easily; it was a collective effort, fueled by hard work and a deep understanding among us. Securing these seats required boldness from my sisters, who bravely contested and won. I urge all females with a passion for politics to step forward, fearlessly pursuing their aspirations. I firmly believe our five female parliamentarians will exceed expectations and make a lasting impact.” She stated.
