Police Hospital to hold mass burial for 200 unclaimed bodies

The Ghana Police Hospital has announced plans to conduct a mass burial for approximately 200 unclaimed bodies as part of efforts to decongest its mortuary.

The burial exercise is scheduled to take place within the first quarter of 2025, and families of missing persons have been urged to visit the hospital’s pathology department before February 28, 2025, to identify and claim their deceased relatives. After this deadline, all unclaimed bodies will be laid to rest in a collective burial.

This initiative comes as the hospital struggles with overcrowding in its storage facilities. Authorities say the exercise will create space and improve conditions for new admissions.

Other health facilities across the country are facing similar challenges.

In the Western Region, the Police Hospital in Bogoso has scheduled a burial for seven unclaimed bodies that have been in storage for 20 months. Likewise, Tema General Hospital is also planning a mass burial to address morgue congestion.

The Police Hospital is calling on the public to spread the information and assist in identifying unclaimed bodies to ensure that families can give their loved ones a proper farewell.
