Prolific GH, organisers of Western Gospel Awards have also accepted the termination letter from Western Regional (WR) branch of MUSIGA after Western Music Awards accepted it last week.
In an unexpected move, MUSIGA submitted a letter signed by its General Secretary to withdraw its support for both awards programs. The Western Music Awards, now in its ninth edition, received the cancellation letter and accepted it within less than two hours. This rapid response has raised serious concerns among MUSIGA insiders and industry observers alike, with MUSIGA executives, particularly the General Secretary infuriated by the quick response.
Critics have pointed to the general secretary’s apparent lack of professional maturity. Described by some insiders as “still learning the rudiments of professionalism,” the general secretary’s decision to publicise Western Music Awards’ letter of acceptance of termination on his Facebook page has sparked widespread debate. Many within the organisation are questioning how someone still carving out his own musical career could be entrusted with such a critical responsibility, with whispers of personal scores and unchecked ambition playing a role in the controversy.
The drama escalated further when the Western Gospel Awards, after receiving the cancellation letter last Friday, also agreed to terminate the partnership today, Thursday 27th February, 2025. An excerpt from their acceptance letter from Western Gospel Awards stated:
“After careful consideration, we agree to the cancellation of the partnership agreement, effective immediately. We will ensure that all references to MUSIGA Western Region, its logo, are removed from our promotional materials.”
This decisive action has deepened the divide within MUSIGA, especially as insiders reveal that most of the organisation’s executives are opposed to the general secretary’s unilateral actions.
Amid the turmoil, MUSIGA’s President in Western Region, Atubiga, has reportedly cautioned the general secretary against using the organization’s letterhead for personal ventures. The internal conflict has left many questioning whether the decision was driven by sound organisational strategy or personal ambition at the expense of MUSIGA’s reputation.
The incident has not only cast a shadow over the immediate future of MUSIGA’s collaborations but also raises questions about governance and decision-making within the organization as it struggles to grow its membership in the region.
With the two prominent awards schemes which keep the Stakeholders in the Western music industry excited about the industry, many now await further explanations from MUSIGA as this controversy threatens to leave a lasting impact on the organisation.
