26th TGMA: Kofi Kinaata wins 5th Songwriter of the Year Award

Kofi Kinaata has won his fifth Songwriter of the Year award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA). The ‘Auntie Ama’ hitmaker has won the category multiple times, showcasing his exceptional talent as a Ghanaian musician and songwriter.

In 2016, Kofi Kinaata won his first Songwriter of the Year award for his song “Susuka”, which also earned him the Best New Artiste of the Year award. This marked his breakthrough in the Ghanaian music industry.

He secured the award again for his song “Confession” in 2017 further solidifying his reputation for thought-provoking and relatable lyrics. His hit song “Things Fall Apart” earned him the award for the third time in 2020.

Kinaata made history, becoming the first artist to achieve this feat at the TGMAs. His fourth was in 2021 with “Behind The Scenes”, setting a record as the first artist to win this category four times.

He continued his dominance in that category in 2025, cementing his position as one of Ghana’s finest songwriter.

Kofi Kinaata’s consistent wins are attributed to his unique lyrical style, which blends Fante rap with highlife and hip-life, addressing social issues, love, and personal experiences.

His songs, such as “Susuka,” “Confession,” “Things Fall Apart,” and “Behind The Scenes,” have resonated with audiences and critics alike, earning him praise for his storytelling and cultural relevance.

Notably, his 2022 loss to Fameye for the Songwriter of the Year award (with Fameye’s song “Praise”) ended his four-year streak, but he bounced back in 2025.

In addition to his tGMA wins, Kinaata recently received accolades, such as the Youth in Entertainment Award at the 2025 Otumfuo Millennium Excellence Awards, recognizing his contributions to Ghanaian music.

His work has also been praised by figures like Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for its insightful and socially conscious messages.
