Manchester United release 10 players as Ruben Amorim begins squad rebuild

Manchester United have joined the rest of the Premier League teams in announcing their retained and released players after the 2024/2025 season.

The Premier League mandated all the clubs to publish a list of the players they intended to release at the end of their contracts on June 30.

The players include the ones whose contracts can still be renewed, which means they could remain at that club next season.

Arsenal’s Thomas Partey is a good example as the Ghanaian has been published on Arsenal’s released list, but contract negotiations are currently underway.

Manchester United’s 2024/2025 season

United are entering the most consequential transfer window in recent seasons as Ruben Amorim looks to build a squad that can compete next season.

Amorim’s short-term stint at United hasn’t panned out as expected so far, with the club finishing in 15th place with only 42 points.

They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, which was their only chance at salvation and qualifying for European football.

The Red Devils’ hierarchy still backs Amorim and will be keen on backing the former Sporting Lisbon manager in this transfer window.

Which players has Manchester United released?

United have released ten players players though talks are ongoing to retain one of them. Of the en, three were first-team players under Amorim and his predecessor, Erik ten Hag.

Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof have all left after their contracts expired, with Evans retiring from international football.

The Northern Irishman played for United over two stints, winning the Premier League, the Champions League, the League Cup and the FA Cup.

“Putting on the green shirt and representing the people of Northern Ireland has been my biggest honour. You, the fans, are simply the greatest in the world,” said Evans, who won 107 caps for his country.

“I have never been so proud to represent every one of you on the pitch. Your unwavering support and love have never gone unnoticed, and I will miss those nights together.”

Eriksen scored in United’s last game of the season against Aston Villa. The Dane completed an incredible comeback to football after that saddening cardiac arrest in 2021. He joined the Red Devils from Brentford.

Lindelof, meanwhile, has been at the club for eight years after arriving from Benfica.

Full list of released players

Apart from the three veterans, others released include academy players Hubert Graczyk, Jack Kingdon, Sam Murray, Tom Myles, James Nolan and Tom Wooster as captured on Manchester United’s website.

Tom Heaton is also on the list, but the club has offered the long-serving goalkeeper a new deal.

Players who could still leave Manchester United

A couple of more players are still expected to leave this summer, either on short-term or permanent contracts.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have returned to the club after their loan deals at Aston Villa and Chelsea, respectively, and they are highly likely to find new suitors elsewhere.

Antony’s loan at Real Betis is also over, and he could join his former manager, ten Hag, at Bayer Leverkusen. Alejandro Garnacho is also high on the list after Amorim reportedly told him to find a new club.

Manchester United’s transfer plans

The club has already welcomed Matheus Cunha, who arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brazilian is expected to bolster Amorim’s attacking options after the struggles of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

Bryan Mbeumo is also still a high priority target after the Cameroon international reportedly mentioned he only wants to join United.

Millions Bruno Fernandes rejected to join Al-Hilal

United were handed a boost after Bruno Fernandes rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.

Al-Hilal offered the United skipper a mammoth contract to move East, but Fernandes turned it down in favour of remaining at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese star has been United’s only shining light in an otherwise dark season.
