Bagbin calls for official leave for MPs, citing strain on family life

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin has called for the introduction of official leave periods for Members of Parliament (MPs), arguing that the heavy demands of their work leave little room for rest or family time.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, he said the perception that MPs go on holiday during parliamentary recess is false, as lawmakers continue to perform their duties in their constituencies.

“MPs don’t go on holidays or vacation. They receded to continue to do the work of MP,” he said.

“I think it is something that we have to consider because the Labour Act expects that you should also have some leave. It is done all over the world.”

The Speaker expressed concern about how the unrelenting nature of parliamentary duties has taken a toll on the personal lives of many MPs.

“Those of us who have sacrificed all these years, we know how our families have been destroyed because you never have time for your family, you never have time for people dear to your heart — the people that you grew up with — and sometimes they don’t spare you,” Mr Bagbin lamented.

He urged lawmakers to begin a conversation on the issue, both within Parliament and with relevant stakeholders, to make provision for official leave days for MPs.

“Please, let’s think over it, discuss with our neighbours outside Parliament, and at least get a few days to have some breathing space — if not to rest, but to share love with your immediate family members,” he appealed.
