Bureau of Ghana Languages endorses Ahanta language orthography for use in schools

The Bureau of Ghana Languages has officially certified the teaching and learning of the Ahanta language in basic and secondary school after schools on Ahanta land, especially in the Ahanta West municipality.
This giant achievement means the language can be examined at both the BECE and WASSCE levels by the West African Examinations Council.
This follows the endorsement of the developed orthography for the Language, which the Bureau says meets all requirements.
In a statement issued on January 15, 2026, the Bureau said “this endorsement is a crucial step towards making Ahanta language examinable at Basic Education and Senior High School levels.”
The Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education can now begin the process of training teachers formally to teach the language.

Ahanta, which already has a Bible translation for the New Testament has never been taught in schools, posing a serious danger of possible extinction of the language.
The Member of Parliament, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, over the last year has made serious efforts including setting up a committee to develop a curriculum for the language.
She earlier held discussions with the University of Education, Winneba as well for the training of teachers who would teach the Ahanta language.
