Ghana Blind Union Members empowered at 7th New Year party in Takoradi

Online news portal 233times.net has once again reaffirmed its commitment to social responsibility and inclusive development with the successful hosting of the 7th edition of the New Year Party for members of the Ghana Blind Union (Western Region Chapter) in Takoradi.

The event, held on January 3, 2026, at Anaji Choicemart, brought together 65 visually impaired members of the Union and their aides for a day marked by celebration, fellowship and empowerment. What began seven years ago as a social engagement has steadily evolved into a sustainable empowerment initiative aimed at promoting economic independence and restoring dignity among persons with visual impairment.

For the third consecutive year, beneficiaries received grants to establish new businesses and scale existing ones. Over the years, recipients have ventured into enterprises including local drink production, baking, popcorn vending, charcoal trading and detergent sales, among others. These ventures continue to provide livelihoods while reinforcing the capabilities of visually impaired persons as productive contributors to society.

In addition to the economic support, a significant welfare intervention was implemented, with all 65 members and their aides enrolled onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to enhance access to healthcare services.

Addressing participants at the event, Nana Kwesi Coomson, the brain behind the initiative and Editor-in-Chief of 233times.net, described the programme as both humbling and deeply impactful. He noted that “it is a rare privilege to be a channel of impact and blessing to the disabled,” emphasizing that the initiative is anchored on empowerment rather than sympathy.

Mr. Coomson further expressed heartfelt appreciation to the many individuals and partners who have supported the programme over the years, acknowledging contributions made in cash, might and ideas. He stressed that the growth and consistency of the initiative would not have been possible without the collective commitment of people who believe in uplifting vulnerable members of society and creating lasting change.

This year’s edition received notable support from the Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim, Hon. Fiifi Buckman, who fully sponsored the cost of food and drinks for the event. His contribution was widely acknowledged as a strong show of leadership and compassion.

The Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim, Hon. Fiifi Buckman, also addressed the gathering, commending both the organisers and beneficiaries. He assured the Union of his continued support, stating that “vision is in the mind and not in the eyes, and the business ventures being run by these visually impaired entrepreneurs clearly demonstrate that truth.”According to him, their success stories challenge society to rethink entrenched perceptions about disability.

The annual New Year Party, now in its seventh year, has been sustained through partnerships with benevolent individuals and institutions committed to community development and inclusive growth.

Members of the Ghana Blind Union expressed profound gratitude to 233times.net, Hon. Fiifi Buckman and all supporters, describing the initiative as life-changing and a source of renewed hope at the start of each year.

As the programme looks to the future, organisers, including Westline Consult reaffirmed their resolve to deepen economic empowerment and promote dignity for persons with disabilities, strongly reinforcing the message that disability is not inability.
