Husband allegedly kills man for chasing wife

Agona Nkum in the Agona West Municipality in the Central Region was thrown into shock last Friday night when a jealous husband allegedly killed a 39-year-old farmer for allegedly trying to woo his wife.

It was the violent end of a confrontation at a drinking spot where Kwame Egyir, 39, had supposedly invited the wife of the suspect, Kobina Kum, 40, for a date.

The suspect is said to have confronted Egyir at the drinking spot where he had invited Kum’s wife, Evelyn Hammond, for a date.

However, in the course of the verbal exchanges, tempers flared and Kum allegedly hit Egyir on the back of his neck with a heavy club a few times.

Egyir managed to flee the alleged brutal assault and sneaked back home to his own wife and children only to die later at the Swedru Government Hospital where he was rushed when they found him moaning, with blood oozing from his nostrils and mouth.

The Agona Nyakrom District Police Commander, Superintendent Frederick Lumor, confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic and said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Swedru Government Hospital morgue, pending transfer to the Police Hospital for autopsy.

He stated that on hearing the death of Egyir, Kobina Kum turned himself into the police.

He said the wife of the suspect was, however, rescued by the police when some residents besieged her house to attack her for the role she played in Egyir’s untimely death.

The couple is currently in police custody assisting with further investigations.

He said the suspects would be charged and arraigned when investigations were concluded.

Sources account

According to sources within the community, Egyir who is married with children made love proposals to Evelyn, which she turned down.

Egyir is said to have continued to pester Evelyn, who eventually informed her husband about the deceased’s romantic advances.

She took the issue a step further when she apparently agreed to meet with Egyir — with the knowledge and consent of her husband — at a popular drinking bar in the town at the peak of the annual Akwanbo festival celebrations last Friday.

The ‘date’ was supposed to bring Egyir face-to-face with Evelyn’s husband so he could warn and ward off Egyir.

Arranged meeting

Evelyn then informed the husband about the time and exact place she was to meet Egyir for their date, so around 11 p.m., Kum, the husband, showed up at the spot and confronted Egyir which resulted in a brawl.

Kum hit Egyir’s neck severally, which drew the attention of passersby and other revelers around.

According to an elder of the town, before meeting Evelyn, Egyir took the family out and later saw them off and went back to town to meet Evelyn.

Egyir managed to escape in the course of the melee but failed to inform the wife when he got home.

He sneaked into his room to sleep.

His wife and children later heard him moaning in pain in his room.

They found blood oozing from his nose and mouth and rushed him to the Swedru Government Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
