Date for 2020 Census to change – Ghana Statistical Service

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) says it was likely the 2020 Population and Housing Census which had been scheduled to take place in March 2020 would be moved forward by “a couple of months”.

In a press statement issued Wednesday evening [January 15, 2020] by the Deputy Government Statistician, David Yenukwa Kombat, the GSS said the change is being anticipated following observations from the completed field census mapping exercise.

This, it said had engendered the need to redesign technological interventions required for complete coverage, enhanced accuracy and timely release of the census results.

It said the Census date will soon be announced to the general public once approved by the National Census Steering Committee.

It said there has been recent conflicting statements on various media regarding the approved date of Ghana’s forthcoming 6th post independence Population and Housing Census and indicated that the Census will be conducted this year [2020].

It said as the Government Statistician indicated during the release of the December 2019 Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Inflation Rates on 8th January 2020, the Census which was originally scheduled for March 2020 is likely to be moved forward by a couple of months.

“To this end, GSS urges stakeholders, media and the general public to maintain positive engagement and participation in the preparation and implementation of the 2020 census activities, including sharing of the right information.
