President Nana Akufo-Addo has officially declared to seek re-election in the December 2020 presidential election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for another four year term.
A team from the Presidency led by Director of Research at the Jubilee House, Victor Newman, on Monday, January 27 picked nomination forms from the party’s national headquarters in Accra on behalf of Nana Akufo-Addo.
Nana Akufo-Addo becomes the first and only person who has picked nomination forms so far to contest the presidential primary of the NPP.
“I’m hoping to be the candidate of the New Patriotic Party,” Nana Akufo-Addo said on Monday.
Apart from the President, no other party member has so far declared intention to challenge the President who will be ending his first mandate on January 7, 2021.
General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu who issued the form to Nana Akufo-Addo’s team told Joy FM he cannot tell whether other persons will pick nomination forms to contest the presidential primary.
If by the close of nomination on February 20 and there is only one person, he said, the party will notwithstanding organise a national congress for the delegates to approve his candidature before he can contest the presidential election.
“We have just 30 days to finish the process and there is the need for him to get signatures from all the regions,” he said.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has up to February 20 to file his nomination forms with a 200,000 filing fee.
