Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has dismissed claims that Ghana has applied for the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Programme of the International Monetary Fund.
Recent media reports suggested that President Nana Akufo-Addo has taken Ghana back to HIPC due gross economic mismanagement.
But delivering a welcome remark at the 5th nation building updates on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra, the minister says the claims are false, “That is not true, it is a false narrative.”
He stated that currently, there was no HIPC Programme for any country to sign onto.
The HIPC Programme was rolled out in 2001 and then President led Ghana to sign onto the Programme.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah Ghana exited the Programme after that time and has never signed onto it again.
Currently there is no HIpC programme for any country to even qualify for, he stated.
On the contrary, he said, the Ghanaian Economy has seen significant improvements under the Akufo-Addo’s Government
So please disregard all of those false narratives that are being put out there, according to the minister.
