Beginning Monday 21st March, drivers of ride-hailing services in the Western Region will be embarking on a sit-down strike to protest the unfair treatment being meted out to them by their partners.
Drivers of Bolt, Uber, Blackride and other ride-hailing services in the region say they have been enduring low fares, poor security and payment of high commissions for some time now and it is about time they did something about it.
Mr Kojo Williams who is the Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Online Drivers Association told Skyy News, the above-mentioned points are not the only reasons they are embarking on the strike by rumorous others as well.
According to him, it’s unfortunate that the clients will be affected but they find this action very necessary.
He said, “We have corporate institutions in Ghana and per the constitution, if you are working in any of them and things are not going right for you, you have the right to strike even though people will be affected.”
“Looking at this ride-hailing service, this is the only way we can demonstrate or express our grievances. Per their system, if a client orders a ride and there are no rides, pressure mounts on the app and they will feel it, this will alert them to do the right thing.”
He says they are hoping for a positive outcome from the strike action after the weekly demonstration and are hoping for negotiation between them and the ride-hailing companies.
