Two suspected armed robbers have been arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in the attack of the Upper Amenfi Rural Bank at Jukwa in the Wassa Akrpong in the Western Region.
They were arrested at two different locations in the Ashanti Region, the suspected robbers were identified as Tahiru Issaka, alias Red, 26, and Yahuza Mohammed, 34, one other person, Gafar Ziyech Abdul was shot dead during the operation.
The Director of the Public Affairs of the Ghana Police, Chief Superintendent Grace Ansah-Akrofi confirmed the operation in a statement.
The statement said on Monday, June 27, three (3) suspected robbers attacked the said bank and made away with an unspecified amount of money after disarming the security guard.
One person was also shot after attempting to mount a roadblock to prevent the robbers from escaping.
The robbers also went ahead to set their vehicle ablaze and abandoned and erase any traces that might lead to them.
Also, the efforts of the Ashanti, Bono and Ashanti Regional Police Intelligence Directorates, over an eight-week period, led to the arrest of the suspects.
However, four vehicles have been retrieved so far by the police which includes a motorbike, the vehicle set ablaze and two pistols and a quantity of ammunition.
“The suspects are currently in police custody while the pursuit of the other accomplices continues. We wish to assure the public that these criminals can run but they cannot hide. Wherever they are we will get them,” the statement said.
