The Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) has issued a strong warning to operators of tricycles popularly referred to as “PRAGIA” to stay off their jurisdiction with their operations be it commercial or private.
The use of tricycles for commercial activities in the southern part of the Western Region especially here in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality and its environs has faced strict opposition from the general public who have called for its total ban from the cities citing several reasons for the ban.
The Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) at its meeting on Friday 27th August 2001, resolved that the operation of tricycles commonly known as “Pragyia” and “Aboboya” should be banned in Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality while in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, the ban is restricted to the Central Business District considering the dangers the operators pose to pedestrians and other road users.
In addition, REGSEC noted with grave concern that, operators of such tricycles who are mostly below the age of 18 years and without the necessary insurance cover, grossly disregard road traffic/safety regulations thereby putting their lives and that of other road users in danger.
Speaking exclusively to Skyy Headline News, EKMA’s Chief Municipal Guard, Nat Tettey said the order is in full force and that the assembly does not want to see anyone with Pragya in its jurisdiction.
He said, “Anybody who is using Pragyia in EKMA jurisdiction will be arrested, we don’t want to see Pragiya at all, whether it is private or for commercial use, even if the best Pragyia mechanic is in EKMA, don’t bring it here for repairs when it develops any fault,”
