An explosion at a quarry site at Kobinanokrom in the Shama District of the Western Region has left many dead and scores injured.
The incident that happened at about 10:40 PM on Saturday, September 9, sent shock waves around the neighbouring towns in Shama and even the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
Mr Lucas Ampong, the Human Resource (HR) Manager of the quarry company, STA ADDSAMS Enterprise speaking to Skyy News said twenty-two (22) workers in total were working on the site on the day of the incident, five (5) of them were Chinese nationals and the seventeen (17) were Ghanaians.
He said three (3) Ghanaians are confirmed dead and nine (9) are currently admitted at various hospitals in Shama, Sekondi-Takoradi and the remaining are yet to be found.
Speaking of the Chinese nationals, he said the body of a female among them has been identified but the other four cannot be identified.
According to him, they are now investigating the cause of the explosion and will update the public in case of any development.
Mr Ampong indicated that even though some body parts are tattered and scattered all over the site, they cannot identify them as the Chinese nationals without proper checks.
The Ghana National Fire Service, The National Ambulance, the Ghana Police Service and some government officials were on the site to calm the situation and ascertain facts on the cause of the explosion.
