Western Region observes 78th Remembrance Day for Veterans

The security services in the Western Region have hosted the 78th Remembrance Day, a commemorative event celebrated in Commonwealth member nations for the troops who lost their lives in the First World War.

The Ghana Police military, the National Fire Service, the Air Force, and former military members gathered on the cenotaph close to Takoradi Harbour on the day, also known as Poppy Day, to honour the fallen heroes.

The public was also to be made aware of the sacrifices made by former service members who gave their lives in defence of their nation.

The Western Regional Minister and Guest of Honour, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, emphasised that selflessness was essential to the development of a nation and urged every Ghanaian to put their all into Mother Ghana.

He commended the veterans for their acts of courage and bravery in the line of duty and charged them to keep ensuring.

The Veterans Administration Ghana read the Biyon Verse: “We Shall Remember Them in honour of their fallen colleagues:

The ceremony saw a wreath laying by the Minister, Ghana Armed Forces, Ex-serviceman, Expatriates, chiefs and people of the Western Region, and other security service agencies in remembrance of the brave veterans across the world.

The remembrance poppy, a symbol in memoriam of the gallant soldiers, was sold to support the welfare of veterans, while a minute’s silence was observed for their gentle souls to keep resting in peace
