NACOC seizes 12,600 slabs of cannabis

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a significant haul of compressed cannabis, amounting to 12,600 slabs, in a truck abandoned in a bush at Dodi near Akosombo in the Eastern Region.

The seizure, which took place on Saturday, was the result of an intelligence-led operation by NACOC.

After locating the truck, NACOC officials conducted a thorough search which led to the discovery of the contraband concealed in sacks of poultry feed.

A statement released by NACOC indicated that the examination of the 180 sacks in total revealed the staggering amount of compressed cannabis.

The truck, along with the seized drugs, is currently under the custody of NACOC pending further investigation. No individuals have been apprehended in connection with the operation, as stated in the official release.

NACOC took the opportunity to remind the public of the specific laws governing narcotic substances in Ghana. Section 39 – 42 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019) outlines the prohibition of activities such as cultivation, importation, exportation, unlawful possession or control, and business related to narcotic plants, including cannabis.

Furthermore, NACOC emphasized that the recently amended Narcotics Control Commission (Amendment) Act, 2023, which offers special provisions for cannabis with no more than 0.3% The content, does not imply the legalization of cannabis.

This provision is strictly limited to industrial purposes, such as obtaining fiber or seed, or for medicinal use.

As investigations into this major drug seizure continue, NACOC remains committed to its mission of combating illegal drug trade in Ghana and ensuring a safer society.
