Prez. Akufo-Addo speaks on passage of anti-LGBTQ bill

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has responded to calls for a decision on the contentious anti-LGBTQ+ Bill following its recent approval by Parliament.

The President has stated that he will await the ruling of the Supreme Court before making a definitive stance on the bill.

His remarks come in light of a legal challenge against the legislation mounted by an individual, prompting the President to advocate for prudence and adherence to due process in the face of the ongoing legal proceedings.

Addressing concerns raised both locally and internationally regarding the bill, President Akufo-Addo assured that Ghana’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law remains unwavering.
He emphasized the need for all parties to await the outcome of the Supreme Court’s deliberation before taking further action.

In his statement, the President acknowledged the complexities surrounding the proposed bill and underscored the significance of upholding the constitutional principles and legal processes of the nation. He highlighted the pivotal role of the Ghanaian state institutions in shaping the trajectory of rule of law and human rights compliance within the country.

The bill, which was passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, criminalizes LGBTQ+ activities, as well as their promotion, advocacy, and funding. Notably, the legislation stipulates jail terms ranging from 6 months to 5 years for those found guilty of engaging in or supporting such activities.

The bill’s approval has sparked diverse reactions from various stakeholders, including criticism from the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Evelyn Palmer.

President Akufo-Addo’s comprehensive response to the developments surrounding the anti-LGBTQ+ bill signals a commitment to upholding legal processes and ensuring a thorough examination of the legislation’s constitutionality, which is now subject to judicial review at the highest level.
