Arrest of Chef Smith: The story so far

Our checks within the camp of the Ghanaian Millennium Chef Ebenezer Smith shows that his arrest was in connection with an alleged contractual disagreement between him and his former sponsors, Amadia Shopping Centre at Spintex, Accra.

Chef Smith was picked up by officers from the La Police Station on Tuesday, July 2, at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra shortly after he announced in the press that he has indeed set the new Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

In fact, he maintained that he is now the record holder with a time of 802 hours and 25 minutes but there’s no official communication as yet from the Guinness World Record.

Speaking exclusively to 3news’ Job Kwabena Laboja, Lawyer for Chef Smith, Mr. Kofi Awoonor said “So, I was called that Chef Smith and his manager have been arrested and the issue is in relation to his former sponsors Amadia Shopping Center who have issues with Chef Smith and that’s why they were brought to the police station.”

He narrated that “When I came to the police station, I wasn’t able to see the main commander on duty, but I met another one who said she is not privy to most of the details of the happening, so we should wait till tomorrow morning then the main commander will be in and also the investigator on this matter will also be around to brief us and tell us the main issue that brought them to the police station”.

The Management of Chef Smith and the sister as well as the lawyer confirmed that Chef Smith was indeed recognized by the Guinness World Record and the arrest is not in connection with the record being fraudulent.

According to them [Amadia Shopping Centre], they wanted Smith to come and present the certificates to them. Smith did not, but he called them to tell them the good news. Only to hear that Smith was having a press conference elsewhere and they were not happy about it.” Akua Eyram, Chef Smith’s distance relative and Management team member told 3news.

When quizzed whether this was a breach of contract she noted, “so I don’t think he’s breached any contracts, because this is a happy and a joyous moment that he needs to tell the whole world about the certificate he’s got. And then afterwards, he’ll go on a thank you tour.”

As at the time of filing this report, the police have not officially pressed any charges yet and we are still making an attempt to get the side of the Amadia Shopping Centre.
