Accra Sports Stadium undergoes swift transformation ahead of Ghana vs. Sudan

The Accra Sports Stadium has seen a rapid transformation after undergoing renovation, raising hopes that it will be ready to host the Black Stars’ upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan.

The National Sports Authority (NSA) had closed the stadium for necessary repairs, alongside other major venues like the Baba Yara Stadium and Cape Coast Stadium.

This move was prompted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF)’s withdrawal of its temporary approval for the Baba Yara Stadium to host category 3 games, following Ghana’s defeat to Angola in their opening AFCON qualifier. The poor condition of the pitch had drawn widespread criticism.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) was in a race against time to prepare a suitable venue for the crucial qualifier.

With just 10 days remaining before the match, images of the newly renovated Accra Sports Stadium pitch have surfaced on social media, impressing many fans who marvelled at the swift improvement.

Despite the progress, some fans remain cautious, recalling similar concerns about the Baba Yara Stadium’s appearance before the Angola match, which later revealed a bumpy playing surface.

Currently, the Black Stars sit third in Group F after a draw and a loss in their opening two games. The upcoming match against Sudan is seen as crucial in their bid to qualify for the tournament.
