Whatever change which needs to be done to rejuvenate the base of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be done, the Presidential Candidate of the NPP in the 2024 general elections, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said.
He said this after indicating that a lot of the members of the NPP stayed away from voting in the elections because they had issues, leading to the party’s heavy defeat in the polls.
Dr Bawumia said this when addressing members of the NPP diasporan branch at his official residence in Accra on Wednesday, December 11.
He said “Our core members stayed home because they had issues, so we have to look at unity, unity is key for us, and that is very important. As it is now we have to regroup and rebuild everything.”
He added “Whatever we need to change we have to change so we have to regroup staying united. we also have to stop the blame game, the blame game doesn’t bring unity.
“I believe that we are going to beat the NDC in 2028, everything that needs to be changed as part of our rebuilding has to be done. Don’t be downhearted, we have work to do, we need your support as we go forward in the next few years.”
The certified presidential results released by the Electoral Commission (EC) reveal massive voter apathy within the NPP.
Over two million (2,073,283) voters who supported the NPP in the 2020 elections chose not to vote in the 2024 polls, leading to their electoral defeat. In 2020, President Nana Akufo-Addo garnered 6.7 million (6,730,587) votes, representing 51.30% of total ballots cast. In contrast, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured just over 4.6 million (4,657,304) votes, a significant drop to 41.61%.
