Akufo-Addo’s statue at Effia Nkwanta completely vandalised (PHOTOS)

The statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, placed at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital roundabout in Sekondi, Western Region, has been completely vandalised.

This marks the second instance of damage to the monument, which was unveiled to honour the former president’s contributions during his tenure.

The first act of vandalism occurred on December 16, 2024, when unidentified individuals inflicted damage to the statue’s leg. Authorities repaired the statue soon after, but no arrests were made in connection with the incident, leaving questions about the perpetrators’ motives unanswered.

The latest attack comes less than a week after Akufo-Addo left office as president, with the statue now entirely toppled.

Authorities erected the statue during Akufo-Addo’s tenure to symbolize his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare and infrastructure in the Western Region.

Its placement near the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital served as a reminder of the former president’s government initiatives to expand access to medical care and resources in underserved areas.

Background and initial agitations

The Akufo-Addo statue was unveiled at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital roundabout in Sekondi-Takoradi in November 2024.

The statue, however, has been the subject of controversy since its installation. Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi have previously called for its removal, arguing that it was inappropriate to place such a monument where the surrounding road was not completed.
