GES announces instalment plan to clear teachers’ salary arrears

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the government has approved the payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to newly recruited teachers under the 2024 financial clearance.

The approval, according to the Service, was granted by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD).

In a statement issued on April 20, 2026, and signed by the Head of the Public Relations Unit, Daniel Fenyi, the GES said the directive covers eligible newly recruited teachers whose salary arrears accumulated between August 1, 2024, and November 2025.

The statement explained that the move forms part of efforts to regularise salary payments and address delays affecting teachers who had already reported to post and commenced work during the period under review.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service wishes to inform the general public, especially newly recruited teachers, that approval has been granted for the payment of outstanding salary arrears associated with the utilisation of the 2024 financial clearance,” the statement said.

According to the GES, the arrears will be paid in instalments rather than as a single lump sum, with disbursements scheduled to begin in May 2026.

Under the payment plan, four months’ arrears will be paid each month from May to August 2026.

The statement noted that the staggered approach is intended “to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and transparency in the disbursement process and to facilitate proper validation and processing of payments through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.”

It added that regional directors have been tasked to communicate the arrangement to heads of schools to ensure that all eligible staff are duly informed.

The GES reiterated its commitment to the welfare of staff and expressed appreciation to affected teachers for their patience throughout the period.
