Demand more accountability from gov’t to fight corruption – CPP to Ghanaians

The Convention Peoples Party has challenged Ghanaians to demand more accountability from the government as a way of fighting mismanagement and corruption in the country in 2014.

The CPP believes the repetitive New Year messages of hope from successive governments must not remain a mere rhetoric but matched by action and deed.

In a statement the CPP party chairperson, Samia Nkrumah said the lives of many Ghanaians remain unchanged or have worsened due to increasing cost of living, unemployment, and inadequate economic opportunities despite the many promises in the new year messages.

In an interview with Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh the Director of communications of the party, Nii Armah Akomfrah chided government’s handling of recent corruption cases and indicated that only Ghanaians can insist that corruption is done away with.

He did not understand how companies found to have misappropriated monies paid them under the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial and Development Agency would be asked to repay the amount when individuals accused of stealing balls of kenkey and other minor items have been jailed for several years.

He said the government is rather “begging” people to pay back monies they have illegally “siphoned” from the state.

Nii Akomfrah charged Ghanaians not to accept New Year commentaries of better plans which are never translated into developments.

He said while government continues tinkering with the problems of the country, it has increased utility by 9.73 per cent and that is definitely going to affect the citizenry in the new year.
