Police kill man for resisting demolition of shops in Adenta

205497081546_3047477165392A man was shot and killed Monday morning by the police at Adenta in Accra for wrestling with the police who were supervising the demolition of unauthorized structures there.

Three others, suspected to be land guards were arrested.

They were alleged to have opened fire on the police in an attempt to stop the demolition exercise being carried out by a private developer at Aviation lands, Adentan in Accra.

But the police returned fire, leaading to the death of one.

The Member of Parliament for Adentan Constituency, Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, told Myjoyonlne.com’s David Andoh that the deceased is a son of the chief of the area.

As early as 6am, excavators, led by armed policemen entered the six hundred and forty acre land and proceeded to demolish makeshift homes, kiosks, shops, and some churches.

Encroachers run helter-skelter trying to move their belongings to safety as the excavators broke down wooden structures and smashed metal containers.

Nii Ashie Moore told reporters that he was upset by the manner in which the exercise was being handled, saying such exercises must be carried out humanely.

Permits produced by some residents which they claimed were issued to them by the Adentan Municipal Assembly in March last year were deemed to be of dubious validity.

Aggrieved residents told Joy News, that although they had received notice of the demolition, they ignored them because such notices in the past amounted to nothing.

The Aviation lands have been earmarked to be developed as a business district for people living in Adentan, Madina and their environs.
