Muntaka describes minority’s decision to investigate sale of Merchant Bank as cruel

The Majority Chief Whip, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed has described the the Minority in Parliament’s decision to pursue investigations into the controversial sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz Private Equity Fund as cruel.

“It is not because we don’t want investigations to be carried out but the method that they seek to use is a cruel one and if we are not careful, it will be open to abuse. We will not allow that,” Mr. Mohammed said

The Minority group in Parliament has announced that they will pursue investigations into the controversial sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz Private Equity Fund. 

They have since appealed to the public to volunteer information on the deal.

This comes three days after the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho dismissed the NPP MP-sponsored motion calling for a Parliamentary probe into the deal. 

Speaking on Eye Witness News, Mr. Mohammed said the majority would have opposed the minority’s request for a probe into the Merbank sale even if the Speaker of Paliament, Edward Doe Adjaho had endorsed it.

“We cannot live in parliament and allow an apartheid system to be in parliament, where it is the minority who will be ruling, we won’t do that. We are 152, they are 123, we will never allow them to try to use unconventional methods simply because those provisions are provided.Even if the Speaker had allowed the motion to go on, we would have voted against it”

According to Mr. Mohammed, the method in which the minority was using to carry out its investigations into the Merbank sale was not appropriate.

“We are not worried about the investigations into this thing, we believe that those who sold and those who bought the bank have their public relations officers and they can speak for themselves .The method they sought to use is what we are questioning.”
