Legon road toll: Parliament summons Minister of Roads and Highways over Uni’s road toll

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport has summoned the Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani, to appear before it on Tuesday to explain the circumstances under which the University of Ghana, Legon was granted permission to charge tolls for the use of its roads.

A member of the committee, Mr Theophilus Tetteh Chaie (NDC Ablekuma Central), told the Daily Graphic that it was not clear to the members of the committee what the arrangement between the ministry and the university was and added that the meeting would create a forum for the members to ascertain the details of the matter.

“We do not know the details of the deal made between the ministry and the institution and so the minister has to appear before the committee and explain to us what the arrangement is,” he said.

Mr Chaie said information available to the committee pointed to the fact that some students of the university had petitioned Parliament, while others had proceeded to the courts to seek redress, and added that “the issue needs to be settled out of court”.

He said personally he was of the view that the university had no right or authority to charge road tolls but said the issues would be brought to the fore and addressed.

According to him, it was clear that the university was not willing to release information regarding the loans it claimed to have secured from the banks to rehabilitate the roads.

He said the solicitor of the university had been evasive with regard to that particular issue anytime the media asked questions regarding the quantum of money secured from the banks.
