Emergency contraceptive ‘Postinor 2’ shorts on Ghanaian University Campuses

download (2)“Postinor 2 is one of the most purchased drugs by Students here on campus” A pharmacy operator at University of Ghana (Legon) told www.233times.net . The case was not different at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) when a pharmacy operator also reechoed that, Postinor 2 is widely purchased. The two said they will only reveal to www.233times.net on the basis of anonymity.

The operators made it known that after Valentine’s Day; the emergency contraceptive was in high demand by students. “It will surprise you to know that the males buy it more than the females. I learnt the ladies feel shy to come and buy it so they make their partners buy it for them” The operator at UCC revealed.

It is not clear what has made the emergency contraceptive short at the pharmacies in this period when there is no major event which demands it’s higher purchase.

Further clarifying, the UCC operator said “we normally buy 320 pieces but we had 297 after vals day but we are left with 9 as at now. I was shocked when in a day, over 90 pieces were sold and the guys bought more. Even though the ladies sometimes come here to buy, but from my observations, males purchased more than the females.”

On University of Ghana campus, the pharmacy operator whose pharmacy is in one of the annexes said as at the time they were speaking to www.233times.net , they did not have Postinor 2 in stock. “We had 79 in stock but now everything has been bought. We have placed order for some though” the operator spewed.

Postinor 2 which is sold for GHc4.00 is an emergency contraceptive only. Postinor-2 is not intended as a regular method of contraception. It is used to prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. It is estimated that Postinor-2 will prevent 85% of expected pregnancies. 95% of expected pregnancies will be prevented if taken within the first 24 hours, declining to 58% if taken between 48 hours and 72 hours after unprotected intercourse.
