fire-guts-abuja-slum-in-accraPersonnel from the National Fire Service have been able put out a fire at the Makola No.1 market in Accra.

Pearl Akanya,  said the firemen were unable to put out the fire when they arrived at the scene at 7am. She said they had to go back to refill their tanks to be able to put douse the fire.

Reports indicate that the fire which started around 4:30am on Friday, has destroyed goods and shops worth thousands of cedis.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are yet to be determined.

The fire started at the market from the shops at the Tudu STC yard .

This is the second fire at market in Accra. In 2014, parts of almost all the major markets in the country were destroyed by fire. Some of these fires were attributed to saboteurs, and this led to government inviting a team of forensic experts from America to investigate the market fires.

However, the report on the fires is yet to be released and there has not been any policy changes on the way markets are maintained or managed.
