Aspiring National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku has bemoaned the loud silence of Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, over the challenges facing the economy.
The country has for some time now been grappling with issues bordering on the continuous downward trend of the economy, coupled with the fall of the cedi against some of the major foreign currencies.
Bank of Ghana (BoG) has instituted measures to save the situation but Dr Mahamadu Bawumia says the BoG needs to take a second look at the measures. Rejecting reasons given by government for the rapid depreciation of the cedi, the renowned economist said the phenomenon cannot be blamed on the re-denomination of the cedi, dollarisation of the economy, the structure of the Ghanaian economy or the single spine salary scheme.
He stressed that dollarization is not the cause of the cedi’s depreciation but rather the effect of weak economic fundamentals and the loss of confidence in the Ghanaian currency.
According to him, any attempt to adjust the cedi in order to catch up with the dollar will be an exercise in futility until proper measures are put in place to strengthen the economy.
His overview has been spurned and his person vilified, hence leading to the NPP communicator to wonder why the Vice President, himself an astute banker and head of the economic management team, has remained silent.
“Where is the Vice President? Why is he not talking? The reason for my question is that he was with the Bank of Ghana and he was part of the economic management team under former President Mills, but look at our economy. We have not heard anything from Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur,” he said. |
