Tarkwa: Corned beef thief gets 10 years

240x_mg_qulw5ba44i_2fd95e9dc54ee4b5deb4c9af2b127dfc_mA Close Circuit Television (CCTV) camera installed in a shop, betrayed a 29 year-old unemployed, who was stealing a carton of corned beef valued at GH¢54.00 .

Abdul Malik has subsequently been slapped with 10 years jail by a Tarkwa circuit court for stealing.

Malik who was recently convicted for committing a similar offence pleaded guilty when he appeared before the court presided over by Mr Samuel Obeng Diawuo.

Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector Edward Paddy said on May 15, at about 0630 hours Mr Emmanuel Asamoah, a supervisor working with Samjoy Supermarket at Nsuta-Wassa was at the shop when the convict approached him and asked for “short bread” biscuit to buy but there was none in stock.

According to the Prosecutor, Malik went round the shop several times came back to the supervisor and asked of the price of PK chewing gum and was told the price.

The convict went out and came back to the shop, compelling Mr Asamoah to monitor his movements on the CCTV camera.

He said Malik stood at the gate for about 10 seconds and tip toed to where the whole sale products were kept, picked one carton of lele corned beef and tried to step out of the shop but the Supervisor rushed and locked the main gate.

He then called the police and the convict was arrested.
